A spandrel beam is a beam in concrete or structural steel structures that extends horizontally from the top of one column to another. Spandrel beams are also called edge beams and are included on every floor.
Spandrel beams can be viewed from the outside of the building. They can be seen as the distinguishing feature between floor levels in high-rise buildings, but it is as important to point out that spandrel beams are a structural element that helps to support curtain walls. In some cases spandrel beams also assist in supporting roof loads.
Spandrel beams are used in multi-story commercial buildings at every story. The spandrel beams are connected to the outside of the floor slabs and offer support for the floor beams. Having spandrel beams strengthens the connection between floors and the outer columns that support them.
